This is our review of Major League Baseball for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The game was released in 1988 and is one of the first games ever to be licensed by Major League Baseball, although it was not licenced by the MLBPA so you get the real teams but not player names.
Brad and I played a regular game against each other. He chose to play with the Kansas City Royals, and I chose the Oakland A’s. Clearly the A’s were a much better team but Brad chose to be loyal to our hometown. Before you can start the game you have to choose your players and set your lineup. This took us considerable time to do and was somewhat annoying, after about 10 minutes we had our teams set and we could finally begin the game.
The gameplay is about what you would expect in a first generation NES game. You have limited control over the pitches. There were several times that Brad or I actually swung at a pitch and a ball was called. Defensively it is very difficult to make a catch in the outfield, and the throwing is a complete flip of coin, sometimes the players throw the ball very fast while other time the runners go faster than the thrown ball. We had a back and forth game, I managed to hit two homeruns and ended up winning 8-7. The batting is pretty simple, one annoying thing is that everytime you hit the ball a green screen flashes before you see where the ball is hit. I guess this is just the NES hardware processing the information. The game was fun, if you can play with a friend you will have a good time, Im not sure how fun it would be playing the computer.
This is our review of Side Pocket for the Nintendo Entertainment System. This game was released in 1987.
If you love pool or pool video games this classic should probably be in your collection. It has been declared by some as the “best billiard simulation for any system” by Computer Gaming World.
Dan and I played this game for about 15 minutes against each other. In the end we tied 1300 to 1300. I must admit that the game feels very much like pool. The shot setup gives you a very clear picture of where you will hit the cue ball. Single play mode is also enjoyable. The object of the game in single play is to clear the table in a certain number of shots. As the game progresses you get less shots to clear it.
This is our review of Monster Party for the Nintendo Entertainment System. This adventure game was released in 1989.
The opening scene is extremely long and tedious as we learn how Mark the main character gets caught up into alien warfare….unexpectedly. Luckily he has a monster friend named Bert who has figured out how to morph Mark into a monster whenever he swallows a magic pill that the enemy happen to carry and handover after they are slain. Mark’s weapon of choice is a baseball bat which could be confused with a sword. This game is ridiculously hard. Every time you die you start over at the beginning of the level. You have to beat an average of 3 mini bosses per level.
If you love challenging adventure games you could probably get into this one. At $4.49 Monster Party NES is a steal.
This is our review of Sky Shark also known as Flying Shark in Japan for the Nintendo Entertainment System. This game was released in 1987. We played this game for about 20 minutes.
Our initial observation is that the game proved to be very difficult. It reminded me of other classic arcade games like Ms. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Galaga…all games that get very difficult in a hurry. If you enjoy 1942 and 1943 or even Ikari Warriors you would probably enjoy Sky Shark. You fly a WW2 bi-plane and shoot down countless numbers of tanks, airplanes, stationary guns, etc. The enemy bullets are considerably faster than you are at times making it nearly impossible to get out of the way.
After about 10 minutes Dan and I were able to complete the first level. Level 2 proved to be much more difficult trying to take out entire fleet of aircraft carriers with a single plane while having enemies enter the screen from the bottom or top. For this game it appeared that I(Brad) had more potential than Dan. Given this is our first review we rank this game #1 on our NES List
Here is a video of the gameplay.
If you want to purchase the game go here Sky Shark NES It’s definitely worth $3.99.
