The Sony PlayStation 1 is the first home video console released by Sony. Originally Sony and Nintendo had intentions of working together to create an SNES-CD that would play the SNES cartridges and CDs format games. This appeared to be a done deal until Nintendo surprisingly pulled out of the deal citing issues with game licensing that they deemed unfair. Sony considered scrapping the project altogether, but after a fierce legal battle with Nintendo they decided to proceed with the technology and brand their own home video system, and thus the Sony PlayStation 1 was born. The PlayStation 1 was released in North America in September of 1995. Sony sold 102 million PlayStation consoles making it the first home video game console to reach the 100 million sold mark. The Sony PlayStation 1 is considered a wild success and led to the demise of the cartridge based video game.
